EU vows to maintain Russia sanctions after US pivot
European leaders close ranks around Volodymyr Zelenskyy following Donald Trump’s fuel deal with Moscow. EU leaders have vowed to maintain sanctions on Russia and sustain their support for Ukraine after Washington signalled it would ease restrictions on Russian fuel to curb global diesel prices.
“We will not lift any sanctions unless Russia stops the war,” European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday, as leaders gathered in Brussels to discuss Kyiv’s needs and EU support for 2027.
Von der Leyen said the bloc was preparing a new round of sanctions against Russia, the 22nd package of restrictions since Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
European governments face a delicate balancing act as they seek to sustain financial and military support for Kyiv while easing domestic concerns over rising energy prices and the cost of living.
