NVIDIA's $50 Million DSX Container POD Looks Pricey
Imagine driving down the freeway behind a truck towing an NVIDIA AI factory to your enterprise site.
That’s the vision offered by NVIDIA, which this week at the GTC Berlin trade show announced a DSX POD reference design for modular AI datacenter infrastructure delivered via shipping container.
Of course, you’ll need the shell with power, networking, and cooling to plug the container into. And buying it could set you back over $50 million per container. But NVIDIA claims that with the DSX POD you’ll reduce the amount of time needed to integrate an AI factory architecture from six months to as little as 14 days, buying more time to “first token” and AI-generated revenue.
The move is a significant effort by NVIDIA to address the time suck involved in setting up AI datacenters, an effort that indeed can take months of integration and validation consuming on-site construction expertise (which is time-consuming and error-prone, according to NVIDIA). It’s also a bid by NVIDIA to introduce its own equipment to populate sizable installations with NVIDIA chips, particularly for neoclouds.
