How Should We Pray to God? A Biblical Guide Rooted in Jesus’ Teaching
A figure kneels in prayer beneath radiant skies, light beams shine as divine grace, with the Lord's Prayer softly inscribed.

In response to the heartfelt question from a seeker of Jesus—'How do I pray to God?' The question “How do I pray to God?“ Is one of the most important questions in the Christian life. Thankfully, Jesus Himself gave us a clear and powerful answer. In Matthew 6:5–13, He not only taught us how to pray but also how not to pray. Let’s explore His teaching and what it means for us today.

Don’t Pray Like the Hypocrites or the Gentiles

Before giving the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus warned:

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites... to be seen by others... And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.”  — Matthew 6:5, 7

What does this mean?

  • Prayer is not a performance. It’s not about impressing others or using fancy words.
  • God is not distant or deaf. You don’t need to repeat yourself endlessly to get His attention.
  • God already knows. Jesus said, “Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him” (Matthew 6:8).

So then, how should we pray?

The Lord’s Prayer: A Model for All Prayer

Jesus gave us a pattern—not just words to recite, but a structure for heartfelt, humble, and powerful prayer:

Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done,  On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts,  As we forgive our debtors.  And do not lead us into temptation,  But deliver us from the evil one. — Matthew 6:9–13

What this teaches us:

  • Start with worship: Acknowledge God’s holiness and greatness.
  • Submit to His will: Ask for His kingdom and purposes to prevail.
  • Depend on Him daily: Trust Him for your needs—physical and spiritual.
  • Seek forgiveness and extend it: Keep your heart clean and free from bitterness.
  • Ask for guidance and protection: Recognize your need for His help in spiritual battles.

Always Be Thankful—Even When It’s Hard

The Bible tells us:

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. — 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Even when life is confusing, painful, or uncertain, we are called to give thanks. Why?

- Because God is always working, even when we don’t see it.
- Because His ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8–9).
- Because He never stops working—He is faithful, even in silence.

Final Encouragement: Keep It Simple, Keep It Real

You don’t need perfect words. You don’t need a special place. You just need a sincere heart.

- Talk to God like a Father—because He is.
- Be honest—He already knows.
- Be thankful—even when it’s hard.
- Trust His timing—He’s never late.

As one worship song beautifully says: “Even when I don’t see it, You’re working. You never stop, You never stop working.”
